HOUSTON, TX — A 53-year-old woman was hospitalized early Tuesday after her car was hit by an HPD cruiser that was involved in a pursuit near northwest Houston, according to Click2Houston.
The collision occurred at the intersection of West Little York Road and Fairbanks North Houston Road at about 1:13 a.m.
Houston Police Department said the events unfolded when an officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle. The suspect fled the scene as the officer approached, prompting a six-minute chase.
As the officer traveled westbound into the intersection, he collided with a sedan driven by the woman. The impact of the crash caused the HPD patrol car to catch fire, but the officer was able to exit the car with minor scrapes.
The driver of the sedan was temporarily trapped in her vehicle and was later taken to Ben Taub Hospital. She was said to be suffering from abdominal pain and had to undergo surgery.
An investigation by the HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division was in progress.
As of this writing, police have not been able to locate the suspect who fled the traffic stop.
