LIBERTY COUNTY, TX — A 51-year-old man died Sunday, a day after a driver collided with a group of cross-country cyclists on Farm to Market Road 787 near Rye, reports My San Antonio.
The crash happened on a span of FM 787 about three miles outside of the town of Rye on October 30 at about 11:00 a.m.
A preliminary investigation shows at the time of the incident, six bicyclists were taking part in an annual group ride that leaves from San Diego and ends in St. Augustine, Florida. The group was riding eastbound on FM 787 when three of the six cyclists were struck by a Ford Escape.
One male victim, a resident of Massachusetts, was airlifted to a Beaumont hospital with critical injuries. He was pronounced deceased the following day.
Two women, aged 54 and 59, both suffered serious injuries and were also transported by airlift to nearby hospitals.
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed no other injuries were reported.
Authorities said the driver, a 66-year-old man, remained at the scene after the event. He was later released without any charges or citations despite a failure to maintain his speed while driving.
The case is being handled by the Texas DPS to determine whether any charges will be filed.
