HARRIS COUNTY, TX — Houston police have determined a cyclist to be at fault in a crash early Wednesday that claimed his life on Texas Loop 494 near Kingwood, according to My San Antonio.
HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division said the fatal accident occurred near Hamblen Road at about 4:00 a.m.
A preliminary investigation indicates the cyclist, a 26-year-old man, was riding northbound on SH-494 when he was hit by a big rig driver, who claimed the rider veered into his path.
The driver remained after the crash and alerted authorities, who later pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
An investigation into the circumstances behind the event remain ongoing, but authorities said the cyclist “may have been at fault.”
No evidence for the conclusion have been released as of this writing, but David Rose, a sergeant with the Vehicular Crimes Division, said the victim was not equipped with the lights mandated by the Texas Transportation Code. Rose also noted the rider was not wearing reflective gear, even though such gear is not currently required by law.
