SUGAR LAND, TX – Three people, including a Sugar Land police officer, were hospitalized after a series of crashes that may have involved intoxicated driving on the Southwest Freeway early this morning.
According to ABC 13, the incident happened at around 2 a.m. on southbound Southwest Fwy, near Highway 90 A. The officer, identified as Ruben Munoz, was working a single-vehicle crash, during which a driver had struck debris on the highway, and then crashed into the nearby wall.
As his vehicle was blocking the emergency lane, he was struck by the driver of a pickup truck.
First responders had to pull Munoz from the vehicle and then administered him CPR. He was airlifted to the hospital in critical but stable condition.
As authorities were responding to the scene, a third driver, a woman operating a Jeep, then collided with the pickup truck.
The driver of the pickup truck was taken to the hospital, where he is expected to survive. Authorities believe he may have been under the influence when the crash happened.
The female driver was also airlifted to the hospital, though her condition was not immediately released.
The accident remains under investigation.
