Pasadena — Car Slams into Wall on Fremont Avenue

Around 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 17, 2019, an elderly woman was driving a late model Chrysler PT Cruiser when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle, thus causing the car to jump a curb and crash into a small retaining wall. This happened near the intersection of Fremont Avenue and Oxley Street.
Thankfully, the driver was not seriously injured in the collision and was treated and released by paramedics.
It is speculated that the reason that the vehicle spun out of control is because of the rain-slicked pavement and that there may have been another vehicle involved in this accident. Investigation is still ongoing.
Vehicles crashing into inanimate objects such as buildings, lampposts, and the like isn’t a rare occurrence. In 2016, it was reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) that there were 266 cases of this kind of crash in Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties. That total is up from 2014’s 255 and 2015’s 240.
Moreover, in other statistics by Rob Reiter and Mark Wright, of the crashes into buildings that happened between 2014 and 2017, 24% involved retail stores, 23% commercial buildings, 19% restaurants, and the remainder including convenience stores, offices, and other non-residential structures.
Also according to Reiter and Wright, the leading causes of these crashes are operator and pedal errors, which account for 30% and 25% of these crashes respectively. Reiter said that operator error usually means drivers accelerated too much or were speeding or were in the wrong gear, while pedal error means the driver made the mistake of stepping on the gas pedal instead of the brake.
Other causes and factors can be drunken/distracted driving, traffic accidents, medical emergencies, age, and sometimes even the weather (i.e. the rain making the road slippery, etc.).
Whatever the case is for this particular accident, it is simply good news to hear that the driver came out relatively unscathed.
