One man died and another person was injured in an early morning crash in Lewisville on Wednesday, January 23, 2019.
According to Denton County Chief Death Investigator Troy Taylor, at approximately 6 a.m., J. Carmelo Gomez-Gonzalez, 49, was traveling in the 1400 block of East State Highway 121 Business when he hit a patch of ice in a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup. After hitting the ice, Gomez-Gonzalez slid across the median and crashed head-on into a 2003 Dodge Dakota pickup. He was then ejected from his vehicle because of the intensity of the impact, and he was immediately pronounced dead on the scene.
Taylor claimed that it seemed like Gomez-Gonzalez was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
A 2017 Cadillac XTS and a Ford Explorer were also involved in the collision. One of the drivers was injured and was taken to the hospital, but there are no more additional information about that.
It is unfortunate to hear of the passing of J. Carmelo Gomez-Gonzalez. Alas, he is not the first one whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents are fairly common occurrences nowadays. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and 90 people dying in car accidents every day in the U.S. alone.
Head-on collision, a particular type of vehicular accident, is probably one of the most dangerous type of crashes, simply because of the increased force sustained by both drivers. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they do account for well over 10% of driving fatalities. Spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death are some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision.
