At approximately 7:15 a.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, a collision that involved a school bus occurred at FM Road 1960 and Rolling Creek Drive in north Harris County.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of the car that collided into the school bus was trying to escape after being shot in the parking lot of the Cypress Ridge Apartments on Bammelwood Drive. It appeared that the man was driving to a hospital or a clinic, but then he passed out behind the wheel, and as a result, he crashed into the left-front tire of the Spring Independent School District bus.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that there were about 10 students aboard the bus at the time of the collision, but thankfully, no one was injured. They were immediately transferred to a different bus.
Investigation is still ongoing for this accident.
Car accidents like this are fairly common in this day and age. In fact, in a statistics done by the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and there is always a car accident that results in death every 16 minutes. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 90 people dying in car accidents every day just in the U.S. alone.
An accident involving a school bus is a type of vehicular accident that is also fairly common. Each year, about 17,000 children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for injuries associated with school buses, and according to a 2006 report by the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice (CIPP) in Columbus, Ohio, more than 40% of school bus injuries are caused by vehicular accidents. On the bright side, at least most of the injuries associated with school bus accidents are considered minor, just sprains, strains, scrapes or bruises, according to the NHTSA.
