Friona – Clovis Man Dies after Car Accident on US 60

A 22-year-old man died following a vehicle collision on US 60, at about four miles west of Friona, Thursday afternoon.
According to initial reports, a 1997 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was heading north from a private driveway when it made a left turn towards US 60. The pickup truck was not able to yield the right of way to a 2014 Freightliner tractor-trailer rig resulting in a collision. The impact of the crash sent the pickup to the eastbound lanes of the highway, killing its driver in the process. He was only identified as a 22-year-old man from Clovis.
The driver of the Freightliner, identified as Jerry Varnell, 71, of Portales, N.M, was not injured. Police said that he was wearing a seat belt.
No citations have been issued as the investigation is still in progress.
