Four injured in apparent explosion at ExxonMobil’s Baytown plant

HARRIS COUNTY, TX — Multiple workers were hospitalized early Thursday after an apparent explosion that caused a fire at the ExxonMobil Baytown Olefins Plant, according to KHOU11.
Authorities said the incident occurred at 3525 Decker Drive at around 1:00 a.m. and was not confirmed cleared until around 9:00 a.m.
Three workers had to be airlifted to a local hospital with flash burn injuries, while a fourth sustained a broken leg and was transported by ground ambulance. As of this writing, two of the victims have since been released from hospitals where two others remain in stable condition.
No other injuries were reported in the event.
Crews with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality responded to the event as a precaution. They later recorded air quality readings that were “below detection levels” around the immediate area.
An investigation with the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office remains ongoing.
