HOUSTON, TX — A woman was critically injured in a fiery single-vehicle wreck early Monday while fleeing police on the Southwest Freeway in Houston, reports Click2Houston.
The collision occurred in the 2200 block of the freeway, near the city’s Westmoreland area, at about 1:25 a.m.
According to Houston Police, an officer pulled over a vehicle that had been swerving in traffic with no lights on. The driver initially stopped and gave her driver’s license to the officer. Moments later, she sped away, prompting a chase.
The suspect continued on the freeway and exited onto the feeder road before colliding with a sign. Her vehicle then burst into flames, which spread to the sign.
Responding officers and Houston Fire crews were able to remove the woman from her vehicle and put out the blaze.
The woman was rushed to a local hospital, where she was listed in critical condition.
No further details have been shared at this time, but authorities said they believe the woman was intoxicated at the time of the accident.
