Driver hits fire hydrant, causing major water main break in NW Houston

HOUSTON, TX — A woman crashed her car into a fire hydrant early Friday, causing a significant water main leak in Houston’s Central Northwest area, reports ABC13 Houston.
The incident took place at the intersection of West 43rd Street and Watonga Boulevard, east of U.S. Highway 290, shortly after midnight.
Residents in the area said water began flowing when the woman’s car struck the fire hydrant in the median.
It was unclear whether or not any injuries were sustained, but the car was severely damaged and had to be towed from the scene. Tire tracks were also observe in the grass near the site.
The event caused water to spew high into the air for several hours until city workers shut it off shortly before 9:00 a.m.
Officials with the city’s public works reassured area residents that low water pressure may be experienced for a time, but that no serious impact to service is expected. The water supply was being rerouted while crews worked to repair the break.
