HOUSTON, TX — A man was killed Saturday night when his car collided with a tree during a police chase near the South Park area of southeast Houston, reports Houston Police Department.

HPD’s Vehiclar Crimes Division said the fatal collision took place in the 8900 block of Coffee Street at around 9:30 p.m.

According to authorities, patrol officers first attempted a traffic stop on a driver in a green Dodge Charger near the 4600 block of Wilmington Street. The driver failed to stop and drove away from the officers at high speed. The officers then turned on their emergency equipment and proceeded to pursue the driver. After a short chase, the driver collided with a tree on Coffee Street’s northbound side. The impact of the collision caused the driver to eject and sent the Charger against a Chevrolet pickup truck.

HPD said the driver died as a result of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

An investigation remains underway.
