Deputy dead after crash with suspected drunk driver on Sam Houston Pkwy

HOUSTON, TX – An officer working with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office died after being rear-ended by a driver suspected of being under the influence on the Sam Houston Parkway yesterday.
According to KTRK, the crash happened at around 5:45 p.m. in the 7200 block of the S Sam Houston Parkway W near Fondren Road.
The driver of a Ford F-550 pickup truck did not maintain a single lane and crashed into the back of a fully marked police vehicle being driven by Deputy Constable Jennifer Chavis, who was wearing her uniform. The deputy’s vehicle then caught fire and became engulfed.
Chavis, who was not seen emerging from the vehicle after the crash, was pronounced dead after the scene.
The other driver, who was identified as Adolfo Serrano, 36, is suspected of being under the influence. It is unclear if he was hurt in the crash.
Authorities continue to investigate the accident at this time.
