The Dallas Police Department is in pursuit of a hit-and-run driver who struck and killed three people on Interstate 635, early Sunday morning.
At around 3:30 a.m., police officers responded to a major collision on the 3200 block of I-635. According to initial reports, three passengers of a gray 2005 Toyota RAV 4 were seen standing along the eastbound lanes of the highway after their vehicle had been disabled. A Chevy Silverado that was traveling eastbound then struck the pedestrians as they attempted to fix a flat tire.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner identified the three people killed Sunday as 22-year-old Hieu Doan, 23-year-old David Nguyen and 23-year-old Christopher Pham. Police said that two people sitting inside the RAV 4 sustained injuries. They were not immediately identified.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Jesus Chavarria-Vasquez, fled the scene without rendering aid to the victims. He abandoned his truck with his injured 12-year-old son inside.
We express our deepest condolences to the family and relatives of the deceased victim. May God grant you the strength you need to get through this difficult moment in your life. We strongly believe that authorities will do everything to bring those responsible to justice.
In the United States, Texas is one of the leading states in the number of traffic collisions involving fatalities. In fact, in 2015 alone, the state recorded more than 1,300 deaths caused by reckless drivers. Despite the government’s aggressive efforts to keep these cases down, Texas remains the worst state in the country for alcohol-involved car crashes.
