A 77-year-old Edinburg man died following a two-vehicle collision on US Highway 77 near Riviera, Monday afternoon.
At around 1:00 p.m., a 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck was heading south on Highway 77 when it crossed the center line and entered the northbound lanes where it struck the rear axles of a 2020 Freightliner semi-trailer truck that was heading south. Based on a preliminary investigation, the driver of the Freightliner attempted to avoid the pickup truck but failed, resulting in a collision.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead by the Kleberg Justice of the Peace at the scene Monday. He was later identified as Fernando Martinez Ochoa, a resident of Edinburg. Fortunately, the driver of the Freightliner was not injured.
No other injuries were reported.
The Corpus Christi Police Department has yet to determine what caused Ochoa to drift into the opposing lanes. The crash is under investigation.
