Texas Department of Public Safety officials said that a two-year-old girl was pronounced dead after a fatal car crash on Farm to Market 70 Road, late Friday evening.
At around 11:00 p.m., an auto collision was reported on FM 70 near County Road 73 in Corpus Christi. According to initial reports, a 2008 Ford Fusion was heading west when, for yet unknown reasons, it veered onto the opposing lanes where it collided head-on with an eastbound 2015 Mercedes Benz. The driver of the Mercedes tried to avoid the wrong-way vehicle but to no avail.
Two occupants in the Ford, identified as Haven Sandoval, 2, and Mario Alberto Benavides, 18, of Kingsville, suffered life-threatening injuries from the impact. They were pronounced dead by emergency crews who responded to the scene. Meanwhile, the passengers and the driver of the Mercedes were all taken by HALO Flight and ambulances to Christus Spohn Shoreline for treatment. This condition remains unknown at this time.
An investigation is underway.
We offer our sincerest sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased victim. May God grant you the strength to go through this difficult time in your life. We believe that the Corpus Christi Police will do everything to bring those responsible to justice.
In the United States, Texas is one of the leading states in the number of traffic collisions involving fatalities. In fact, in 2015 alone, the state recorded more than 1,300 deaths caused by reckless drivers. Despite the government’s aggressive efforts to keep these cases down, Texas remains the worst state in the country for alcohol-involved car crashes.
