Carrollton — Drunk Driver Rear-Ends Police Vehicles

On early Sunday morning, January 27, 2019, two Carrollton police officers almost died after an alleged drunken driver struck their vehicles as they worked on a crash.
According to Carrollton Police, the officers were working on a minor crash in the northbound lanes of Interstate 35, near Crosby Road, just before 4 in the morning when the drunk driver, 30-year-old Welsey Tyree, crashed into the back of one of their police Chevy Tahoes. This collision had such great impact that it wrecked into the other police Tahoe.
Tyree was the only one who was injured. He is charged with driving while intoxicated, but there is a possibility that there would be additional charges filed against him.
It is great to hear that no one was seriously injured in this accident. Unfortunately, there are countless other victims who are not as lucky. Car accidents like this happen quite often nowadays. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and 90 people dying in car accidents every day in the U.S. alone.
DUI (driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol), along with speeding and driving while distracted, is a common cause of car accidents, and it is quite an appalling one. According to the NHTSA, about 28 people die every day as a result of drunk driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 people died in drunk driving accidents — one every 52 minutes — while about 345,000 were injured. These statistics do not bode well at all, and something has to be done to stop these numbers from climbing up.
