Brownsville—Hit-and-Run Crash on Padre Island Highway

The Brownsville Police Department is still investigating a car collision which killed a bicyclist on Padre Island Highway, Monday morning.
According to initial reports, local responders were dispatched at the 5700 block of Padre Island Highway after receiving a call reporting an accident at around 10:40 a.m. In the report, a bicyclist was riding his bike on the shoulder lane of the highway when he was hit by a white sports utility vehicle. A witness told the police that the said vehicle repeatedly struck the victim, killing him in the process.
The bicyclist was pronounced deceased by emergency crews. He was later identified as 79-year-old Nicolas Garza Torres.
The driver of the SUV, identified as 34-year-old Juan Luis Rodriguez, was later arrested and is taken into custody. He is charged with accident involving death and criminally negligent homicide.
The crash remains under investigation.
