Austin law enforcement officials arrested a suspected drunk driver after getting involved in a traffic accident on West Fifth Street in downtown Austin.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle was attempting to make a left turn towards North Lamar Boulevard from West Fifth St where it struck a scooter. The rider of the scooter, who was identified only as a woman, sustained broken skull and serious skin abrasions from the force of the impact. It was not confirmed if she was rushed to a local hospital for medical treatment or treated at the scene. Police said that the victim was in a crosswalk when the incident happened.

The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and was then arrested for intoxication assault. He was identified as 24-year-old Jonathan Violante.

An investigation is underway.

Our sincerest sympathies to the victim of this unfortunate accident. We pray for their full recovery as we hope that the Austin Police Department will do everything to bring those responsible to justice.

Drunk driving in Texas commonly result in a serious injury and sometimes, death. While accidents are fortuitous events that cannot be foreseen, they can be prevented if only drivers had simply put their complete attention on the road and taken their responsibility as drivers more seriously. This is why, despite conscious efforts by government to combat the increasing number of fatalities and injuries every year, crashes due to negligence is still on the rise.

While it can be difficult to remain calm in a situation like this, it is important to know that you can be entitled to compensation and claims following a collision. If you or your loved one has been injured in a car accident caused by a negligent party or a driver under the influence of alcohol, you may have a right to a fair compensation for the trauma you experienced and the injuries you have suffered.
