Athens – One Injured when School Bus Crashed into Pickup Truck on Highway 175

One was hospitalized following a bus crash on Highway 175 East in Athens, Tuesday afternoon.
Just before 5:00 p.m., local troopers responded to Hwy 175-E eastbound near Smith Lumber Company to assist in a major accident involving a school bus. Initial investigation indicates that an Athens ISD bus was stopped at the eastbound lane of the highway to unload students when, for reasons that had not been determined, a Chevrolet pickup truck struck its side.
Fortunately, no students sustained injury from the force of the impact. Meanwhile, the driver of the pickup truck was transported to a nearby hospital where he was listed in stable condition. His identification was withheld.
In a statement released by Athens ISD, the bus had activated its unloading warning lights when the crash took place. Students who were onboard the bus were immediately transferred to another bus following the incident.
