The 22-year-old driver who died in a fatal two-car crash on Highway 83 in Asherton has been identified, a local news source said.

Authorities identified the victim as 22-year-old Diego Cantu.

According to the initial investigation, the accident happened on Hwy 83, south of Carrizo Springs. Diego Cantu was driving a 2013 GMC Sierra when, for reasons that had not yet been determined, it crashed into the rear side of a tanker trailer. The force of the impact killed Cantu at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt. Meanwhile, a passenger in the Sierra sustained serious injuries and was immediately taken to San Antonio Hospital for treatment. He was listed in critical condition.

No other injuries were reported.

The Asheron Police Department arrived at the scene to determine liability. They believe speed may have played a role in the collision.
