The Amarillo Police Department is conducting an investigating about a vehicle crash on Interstate 40 that caused the death of two people and injuries to several people, Saturday morning.
Just after 8:30 a.m., local officials were dispatched to I-40 at mile marker 114, near Groom, to assist in a major vehicle accident involving two semi-trucks and a U-Haul towing a car. Based on the preliminary investigation, the U-haul had been traveling along the highway when, for reasons that had not yet been determined, it drifted into the opposing lanes and crashed into a semi-truck. The force of the impact prompted a chain-reaction collision involving several vehicles. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear at this time but it was confirmed that one of the semi-trucks caught fire following the crash.
Two people were pronounced deceased at the scene. They were occupants in the U-haul. Meanwhile, the driver of the first semi-truck was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital with fatal injuries while a passenger in the second semi was listed in serious condition at UMC hospital in Lubbock.
An investigation is underway.
