A 34-year-old rider lost his life after a fatal motorcycle accident on Ninth Avenue, Sunday afternoon.
Just before 6:00 p.m., local troopers responded to the scene of the crash on 9th Avenue near Bushland Avenue. According to initial reports, a 2005 Harley Davidson was seen traveling along the westbound lane of the road when, for reasons that had not been determined, it went out of control and drifted onto the opposing lanes. The motorcycle then collided with a 2007 Dodge Grand Caravan, leaving him with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead by local paramedics.
Meanwhile, the man behind the wheel of the Caravan, identified only as a 64-year-old male driver, was rushed to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries was not disclosed.
This incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Department. According to them, speed may have played a role in the accident.
According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. That is roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and 90 people dying in car accidents every day in the U.S. alone. Driving while distracted, under the influence of alcohol, and at an unsafe speed are three most common causes of car accidents.
