A man died after a traffic crash that occurred on Highway 290 in southwest Travis County on Tuesday morning, January 22, 2019.
According to Austin-Travis County EMS, the accident occurred near the Tara Lane intersection, just west of the Y in Oak Hill. It was reported that the driver merged into oncoming traffic, side-swiped a car, and then collided head-on into a truck carrying a trailer.
ATCEMS and crews with the Oak Hill Fire Department had to extract the driver from the vehicle. He was taken to South Austin Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
It is truly unfortunate to hear of the passing of the unidentified driver; however, he is not the first one whose life is taken away by a car accident. Car accidents like this are fairly common in this day and age. In fact, in a statistics done by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), car accidents occur almost every minute of every day, and there is always a car accident that results in death every 16 minutes. This can be translated to roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and about 90 people dying in car accidents every day just in the U.S. alone.
Furthermore, a particular type of car accident, head-on collision, is probably the most dangerous type of crashes of them all, simply because of the increased force sustained by both drivers. Reports estimate that head-on collisions only comprise 2% of reported crashes, but they do account for well over 10% of driving fatalities. Spinal injuries, brain injuries, catastrophic injuries, broken bones, paralysis, and of course death are some of the common outcomes of a head-on collision.
