LAKE SOMERVILLE, TX – In an update to an earlier report, Justin Richard, a well-known Houston rodeo cowboy, was one of four killed in a head-on collision near Lake Somerville on Saturday.
At approximately 11:05 p.m. on May 9, Richard, 37, was in the backseat of a Ford F-250 which ran off the road and crashed. ABC 13 reports that the Ford was traveling south on LBJ Drive, when the driver Ignacio Aviles, 37, lost control of the car and drove off the right side of the road.
The Ford hit a guardrail before driving into the northbound lane. The Ford then collided head-on with a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban.
The Suburban’s driver, 18-year-old Chase Sowders, and two passengers, 18-year-old Jasmine Maxwell and 6-year-old Payton Francis, were all killed in the accident. Officials report that Francis was the only person wearing a seatbelt in the Suburban.
In the Ford, neither Justin Richard nor Ignacio Aviles was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.Â
Police pronounced Richard dead on the scene of the accident.
Aviles survived the crash, but he sustained life-threatening injuries. Officials airlifted Aviles to CHI St. Joseph Health for treatment, where medical personnel report he is in critical condition.
Texas State Troopers are currently investigating this accident to determine the cause. They believe it is possible that high speed or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
