Four dead, one injured in two-vehicle collision near Lake Somerville

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TX – Four people were killed and a fifth was injured in a two-vehicle collision that occurred near Lake Somerville late Saturday evening, the Bryan-College Station Eagle reports.
Ignacio Aviles, 37, was driving his Ford pickup southbound on LBJ Drive at approximately 11:05 p.m. on May 9 when he lost control of his vehicle, Sgt. Jimmy Morgan of the Texas Department of Public Safety told the Eagle. Aviles’s truck slammed into a guardrail and then collided head-on with a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. He was not wearing a seat belt, and was taken to CHI St. Joseph in Bryan for treatment, where he is in critical condition.
The driver of the Suburban, 18-year-old Chase Sowders, was killed in the accident, as were passengers Jasmine Maxwell (18), Payton Francis (6), and Justin Richard (37). According to Sgt, Morgan, Sowders and Francis were wearing seat belts while the others were not.
An investigation is ongoing, and has not yet determined if alcohol or other substances played a factor in the accident.
