Initial report in fatal helicopter crash inconclusive

HOUSTON, TX – The National Transportation Safety Board today released the report of its preliminary investigation into the May 2 crash of a police helicopter which killed the tactical flight officer and injured the pilot, the Houston Chronicle reports. It remains unclear what caused the helicopter to crash into an apartment building.

Jason Knox and Chase Cormier were in HPD’s 75 Fox helicopter investigating reports of bodies floating in a bayou near the Biscayne at Cityview Apartment Complex at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning. Shortly afterwards, a nearby Forensic Science Center police team reported that the helicopter had gone down. The two officers were trapped in the wreckage for some time before rescuers were able to free them and airlift them to Memorial Herman for treatment. Knox died at the hospital, while Cormier is expected to recover.
