Houston — Car Collision on Harrisburg and 75th Street Leaves Child in Critical Condition

One child is left in critical condition after a vehicular crash that occurred in east Houston on Sunday morning, January 20, 2019.

According to the Houston Police Department, the site of the accident was the intersection of Harrisburg and 75th Street on the southeast side, and the accident occurred when a red truck with a male driver and a female passenger was driving erratically on the road. The truck then ran a red light and collided with a black Cadillac.

Michael Colchael, an eyewitness to the accident, claimed that he noticed that the driver was behaving recklessly before the crash. Colchael immediately jumped into action to help the victims trapped in the collision, including a 5-year-old girl who is currently in critical condition.

Colchael also says that the driver of the red truck stayed at the scene but did not do anything to help the victims. The driver has been identified as Israel Lugo, and he is now in the Harris County Jail.

It is unfortunate to hear of this accident that has left a few individuals injured, particularly that young girl who is still in critical condition as of right now. However, it is even more unfortunate to realize that vehicular accidents like this are common in this day and age. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. That is roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and 90 people dying in car accidents every day in the U.S. alone.

Speeding, driving while distracted, and driving under the influence of alcohol are three most common causes of car accidents, and from Colchael’s testimony, it can be assumed that Lugo fits the third cause.

DUI accidents are incredibly appalling, and yet they continue to happen on a daily basis. According to the NHTSA, about 28 people die every day as a result of drunk driving crashes, and in 2010, 10,228 people died in drunk driving accidents — one every 52 minutes — while about 345,000 were injured. These statistics do not bode well at all, and something has to be done to stop these numbers from climbing up.
