A car accident involving a shooting occurred on Saturday, January 12, 2019, in northwest Harris County.
According to Harris County Sheriff’s Office, at around 4:24 p.m. in the 12599 block of Bammel North Houston Road near West Richey Road, an unidentified male driver was shot multiple times allegedly by another unidentified driver, and this caused him to crash his vehicle into another one.
The victim was then transported to the hospital and is in critical condition as of right now.
Despite the ongoing investigation, there are no suspects detained at this time.
It is unfortunate to hear of what happened to the victim. Alas, car accidents aren’t uncommon in this day and age. In fact, according to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. This can be estimated to about 6 million car accidents every year and about 90 deaths as a result to car accidents every day in the U.S. alone.
Aside from car accidents being common, being shot by a gun or any other form of firearm is another common occurrence, especially in the United States. In fact, statistics show that gun violence is a leading cause of death in America, with 13,000 people dying because of this each year. This can be translated to a roughly 1-in-315 chance of death from gun violence. Furthermore, the chance of dying from gun violence is about 50% more than the risk of dying while riding inside a vehicle, and it’s also more than 10 times as high as dying from any force of nature like hurricane, earthquake, and the like. This can then be interpreted as Americans more likely to die from gun violence than the combined risks of drowning, fire and smoke, stabbing, choking on food, airplane crashes, animal attacks, and natural disasters. That is a terrifying picture indeed.
