Pinehurst — Victim Identified in a Hit-And-Run Accident in 3100 Block of W. Park

On Saturday, January 5, 2019, the Pinehurst Police Department found a 40-year-old male lying on the side of the roadway on the 3100 block of W. Park.
The man is later identified as Jonathan Sibley of Orange County, and he was bleeding profusely when he was found and had apparent head injuries. He was later transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont and then to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston where he is listed to be in serious but otherwise stable condition.
According to the witnesses on the scene, Sibley was hit by an unknown model of black Cadillac. The witnesses also claimed that the driver of the Cadillac, a male, initially stopped and exited his car to move the victim out of the roadway, but then he left the scene prior to the officers’ arrival.
Another witness was able to photograph the license plate on the Cadillac, which returned to an address in Orange, and though the driver was not at the residence when the police visited, the driver had reached out to the police and would be cooperating fully in the investigation.
His identity is not revealed, and he has pending charges for failure to stop and render aid, a 3rd degree felony punishable by 2-10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Hit-and-run accidents are undeniably dreadful, and no one should have to experience this. According to a study done by roadside-assistance giant AAA, 2,049 hit-and-run deaths happened in 2016 — the highest annual total on record — and in the decade that led up to that peak, there were about 682,000 crashes that occurred each year in which the driver fled the scene.
Texas is reported to be the 8th worst state for hit-and-run fatalities, a fact that is terrifying and needs to be changed.
