During the Christmas break in 2018, Fernando “Nandito” Dominguez IV, 20, was driving along Highway 225 near Scarborough in Pasadena, Texas, heading home to spend his time with his family and friends, when all of a sudden, he fell asleep behind his wheel and lost control of the vehicle.
It all happened so fast for Dominguez. He claimed that he was alert and aware of everything, and then the next thing he knew, he had hit the side of the barrier, and then he couldn’t move. That’s when he discovered that he was impaled to his car seat by a metal pole. In an effort to stay alive and get help, he said that he had to use his feet to grab his phone and called 911 in that manner.
Authorities found him and immediately flown him to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition. Just recently this January 15, 2019, he is discharged from the hospital after many surgeries and is now surrounded by his family.
It is incredibly good to hear that despite the horror that Dominguez had to go through, of almost losing his life because of a car accident, he managed to still stay alive. Alas, many other victims of vehicular accidents aren’t just as lucky. Car accidents are a serious problem in this day and age, and yet they still happen quite often. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA), car accidents happen almost every minute of every day, and for every 16 minutes, a car accident occurs that results in death. So that is roughly about 6 million car accidents every year and 90 people dying in car accidents every day in the U.S. alone.
Aside from DUI (driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs) and speeding, another common cause of car accidents is driving while distracted, which is the case for Dominguez. Taking your eyes off the road for even just a second is a huge risk, and it is not advisable for anyone to do that under any circumstances.
However, if anyone finds themselves in a car accident, or if anyone has a loved one who is involved in the accident, never lose hope because help will always be available for them.
