HOUSTON, TX – A 5-year-old girl was killed, and her 4-year-old sister was severely injured last night when their father crashed his vehicle in a drunk-driving-related accident.
The accident happened at the 8900 block of Sam Houston Parkway West around 11:30 p.m, reports the Houston Chronicle, when the 31-year-old father of the girls crashed his car into a traffic light.
The driver was intoxicated, according to witness reports, and he failed a field sobriety test administered by authorities. He is currently being held in the Harris County Jail.
The 5-year-old child was not sitting in a car seat when the accident happened. Her sister was sitting in the front passenger seat without proper restraint. According to Texas law, children under the age of 8 must be properly restrained in a child car seat, and children under 13 are recommended to sit in the back passenger seats.
The 5-year-old girl died at the hospital, while the 4-year-old is expected to pull through her injuries.
